Day 1: Arrive Auckland Welcome to Auckland! On arrival at the airport you collect your rental vehicle before making your way to your centrally located accommodation. This afternoon you visit at your leisure Auckland’s Sky Tower. At 328 metres, the Sky Tower is the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere, offering breath-taking views for more than 80 kilometres in every direction. Perhaps enjoy dinner here this evening at their revolving restaurant.
Included for the duration of your rental car hire is an innovative commentary system. Imagine driving around New Zealand automatically gaining an in-depth knowledge of the history of the towns and regions you pass through, hearing ancient Maori myths and legends, listening to stories told by the characters that shaped our history, learning of the unique wildlife, geographical landmarks and scenic attractions that you see as you travel. Packed with over 2,000 audio commentaries, KRUSE® is guaranteed to keep you entertained and informed everywhere you go on your New Zealand self-drive holiday.

Day 2: Auckland to Bay of Islands At the beginning of your journey today, you’ll drive over the Auckland Harbour Bridge towards the bays and beaches of Auckland’s North Shore. The motorway will quickly sweep you northward, until the suburban scenery gives way to peaceful farmland. Perhaps stop to marvel at the magnificence of the protected Kauri Tree at the Parry Kauri Park. You then enjoy spectacular scenery of native forests and sub-tropical bush as you make your way to Paihia in the Bay of Islands, a seaside town nestled on the foreshore of the National Maritime Park.

Day 3: Cape Brett 'Hole in the Rock' Cruise
Experience the natural wonders, stunning scenery and learn about the cultural significance of this unique part of New Zealand, on a spectacular four hour cruise to Cape Brett and the iconic Hole in the Rock. Get a glimpse into New Zealand’s earliest European history as your luxury catamaran (Tiger V) passes by Russell, the first capital of New Zealand, and many historically significant islands in the Bay. Enjoy the views as your skipper takes you into the open sea and out to the stunning Motukokako Islands, then past the Cape Brett Lighthouse. From there you venture into the stunning Hole in the Rock at Cape Brett (conditions permitting) – hold your breath as the skipper navigates through the narrow space and admire the rock walls which soar above you. Watch out for water drops if you’re seated on the top deck! Then take in the majestic Grand Cathedral Cave before heading back into the sheltered waters of the Bay.
Day 4: Bay of Islands to Auckland Today enjoy a leisurely drive back to Auckland via the East Coast of the North Island and through Auckland’s northern suburbs. You may note the sprawling nature of Auckland, which despite only having one million inhabitants, is one of the top 10 largest cities in the world area wise.

Day 5: Auckland to Rotorua via Waitomo Caves As you depart Auckland today, suburban scenery gradually gives way to the farmland of South Auckland, an area favoured by bloodstock breeders. The Waikato River will then accompany you for much of your journey through the green countryside to reach Hamilton, a city carved in two by the mighty Waikato River. Continue South through prime farmland to reach the Waitomo Caves region. Here you enjoy a guided tour of the world famous Waitomo glowworm caves including an underground boat ride (weather permitting) on a subterranean river. Overhead thousands of tiny glowworms light up the cave walls and roof. Then travel through a mixture of farmland, lakeland and forest to reach the geothermal city of Rotorua.

Your pass includes Paradise Valley, a superb trout and wildlife enclosure; the Agrodome – a live on stage sheep show and Te Puia where you can learn the Maori culture and see the famous mud pools and Pohutu Geyser. The rest of the day is at your leisure. This evening you combine a memorable Maori cultural experience with Rotorua’s original Nature Park, Rainbow Springs, by night and Mitai Maori Village. The opening features Maori warriors paddling down stream by waka (war canoe) - a truly special moment, followed by Maori cultural performance, succulent hangi meal, tranquil bush walk, glow worm viewing, and visit to sacred Fairy Spring.
Day 7: Depart Rotorua Sadly your time in New Zealand comes to an end as you return your rental vehicle to either Rotorua or Auckland Airport in time to join your onward flight. Here, we bid you a fond farewell to your homeland and hope you leave with many happy memories of your stay in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
