Day 1: Arrive Christchurch On arrival at Christchurch airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your centrally located hotel. Thought of as the most English of New Zealand cities, it is the nation's second largest city & is alive with colour, atmosphere and world class attractions. Stay: Hotel Grand Chancellor (3 nights)
Day 2: Whale Watch Adventure (B) Depart Christchruch today and travel north to Kaikoura. On arrival you join a three hour Whale Watching experience by boat. Off the coast of the Kaikoura village is a marine environment so rich in nutrients that it attracts some of the most magnificent creatures with which we share our planet. Among them the giant Sperm Whale which can grow up to 20 metres in length and has the largest brain of any animal alive. Not only can you be introduced to the magnificent Sperm Whale, but also to migratory Humpback Whales (June & July), Orca (summer months), New Zealand's own tiny Hectors dolphin, the high spirited displays of the Dusky dolphins, New Zealand Fur seals and the Royal Albatross. After your encounter with the giants of the sea and marine life, return to Christchurch.
Day 3: Akaroa Day Tour & Wildlife Cruise (BL) Travel to Akaroa the Banks Peninsula, known for its stunning scenery and amazing wildlife as well as home to the early French settlers of the 1840s. Your harbour cruise today will be fully narrated by your skipper who has extensive knowledge of the nature, wildlife and history of the harbour. The highlight of this trip is undoubtedly the sighting of one of the world's smallest and rarest dolphins, the Hector's or New Zealand Dolphin. These friendly and inquisitive mammals meet the boat most days throughout the year and their calves can be seen between October and March. Also on the trip you may catch glimpses of the White Flippered Blue Penguin, the smallest penguin in the world. There are many different bird species in the Harbour, including five different cormorant species and there is the chance of sighting the endangered yellow-eyed penguin.
Day 4: Spectacular Tranz Alpine Train, Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers (B) Regarded as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world, the famous Tranz Alpine train will take you deep into the heartland of the South Island . . . a coast to coast journey through some of the world's most extreme and beautiful scenery. This afternoon, travel along the dramatic West Coast, steeped in history dating back to the gold rush era of the 1800's, to the glacier township of Fox Glacier. Stay: Te Weheka Inn
Day 5: Haast, Wanaka, Queenstown (B) There is the opportunity to experience a scenic flight over this remarkable region (subject to weather conditions) before our departure this morning. Today, view incredible scenery as you travel past the untouched native forests and pristine lakes of the World Heritage Westland National Park and Haast Pass. We then travel over the magnificent Southern Alps to the Southern Lakes District. Time to wander around the popular lakeside townships of Hawea and Wanaka before travelling over the spectacular Crown Range to the historic gold mining village of Arrowtown. On to Queenstown, a beautiful alpine resort regarded as New Zealand's premier holiday destination. Stay: Heritage Hotel Queenstown (4 nights)
Days 6 & 7: Explore Queenstown & Its Surrounds (B) Enjoy two full days to experience this magnificent resort. Surrounded by majestic mountains, Queenstown boasts adventure & leisure activities in all forms, from extreme to relaxed exploration. Here you can take a thrilling jet boat ride, pan for gold, raft the white water rapids, take a wine trail, fish for trout, play golf or 4WD sheer canyons. It is also a great base from which to explore the Fiordland National Park, gateway to the awesome Milford & Doubtful Sounds. There are numerous activities from which to choose and your Tour Guide will be pleased to offer advice and help you in your selection.
Day 8: Milford Sound Coach, Cruise & Fly (B) This morning depart on an unforgettable journey from Queenstown into Milford Sound as you journey along the edge of Lake Wakatipu to Te Anau. The road to Milford is one of New Zealand's most scenic drives. The first part is relatively mild farmland, then you'll ease into beech forest near the entrance to the Fiordland National Park. The rough hewn Homer Tunnel brings you into Milford Sound, an amazing 22km-long fiord dominated by Mitre Peak. At Milford Sound, board your boat for a spectacular cruise in New Zealand's most famous waterway, a dramatic 22 kilometre fiord carved by glaciers during the last ice age. After your cruise you join your scenic flight back to Queenstown. Hanging valleys, alpine lakes and cloud-piercing summits hidden from the road are just some of the reasons why flying between Milford Sound & Queenstown is an excursion of a lifetime!
Day 9: Arrowtown & On To Mt Cook National Park (BD) Set beneath the rugged Crown Range is Arrowtown, a fascinating collection of mining cottages with an atmosphere straight out of last century. Enjoy some time to stroll through this historic village located beside the Arrow River, once a haven for the gold prospectors of the 1860's. Later, we travel through the towns of Omarama & Twizel before driving up the western side of Lake Pukaki to the Mt Cook National Park, a World Heritage listed site. (Optional Ski-plane & helicopter flights are available subject to weather conditions). Stay: Hermitage Hotel
Day 10: Mt Cook National Park, Christchurch (B) Leaving Queenstown, journey north to the world-heritage listed Mt Cook National Park. The park covers over 70,000 hectares of breathtaking alpine scenery and boasts Australasia's highest mountain, Aoraki or Mt Cook, at 3,764 metres. There are a further 140 peaks over 2000 metres high and the Tasman Glacier, the longest in the southern hemisphere. Optional ski-plane and helicopter flights are available subject to weather conditions. Then its on to beautiful Lake Tekapo to view the tiny Church of the Good Shepherd, built of local stone and oak in 1935. Leaving the Mackenzie High Country, cross the vast Canterbury Plains to the 'Garden City' of Christchurch. It is the nations second largest city and is alive with colour, atmosphere and world class attractions. Stay: Hotel Grand Chancellor
Day 11: Depart Christchurch (B) Sadly, your holiday is at an end and you will be transferred to Christchurch airport today for your onward flight. Here, we bid you a fond farewell to your homeland and hope you leave with many happy memories of your stay in Aotearoa, New Zealand. |
